Is it better to have loved and lost?  Violetta abandons her life in Paris to pursue true love with Alfredo.  She is persuaded to leave him to protect his honor and good family name and returns to the whirl of society life to hide her grief.  Alfredo discovers the truth when she dies in his arms.

Verdi himself recommended this as a good first opera to experience:  the story is moving and the melodies are breath-taking.  No wonder it's opera's best-seller!  Every time we perform La Traviata it's sold out.  Don't miss it!
