In January of 2012, Monica Harte was named General Director of Nevada Opera Association (NOA), the company her parents, Ted and Deena Puffer, founded in 1968. Monica Harte is co-founder and General Director of Remarkable Theater Brigade (RTB) in NYC. She is creator and producer of RTB’s annual production of Opera Shorts at Weill-Carnegie Hall and she will be featured in the upcoming documentary on RTB and Opera Shorts to be aired on Brooklyn Cable in 2012. Ms. Harte’s bi-coastal positions are complimentary without being a conflict of interest in that the two companies (RTB and NOA) produce different types of operatic productions. RTB brings new music to new audiences, creating new operas for children and adults with an emphasis on modern accessibility. With Monica Harte at the helm, NOA will be creating new productions of standard works with a modern but classy twist on the great standards of operatic repertoire.
Ms. Harte has performed throughout North America and Europe and she currently produces, directs and sings for various companies in and around the tri-state area. She was stage director for a selection of NVO’s productions as well, including their production of Madame Butterfly, which will be the first ever anime-inspired production of this great work.
Ms. Harte has recently recorded 2 CDs for MSR Classics Record Labels, Songs from Another Place for which Fanfare Magazine said “exquisitely controlled vocal instrument she uses to delve into the hearts of… texts with uncanny powers of penetration,” and Long Island Songs, which referred to “her bright clarion voice,” in the positive review on Sequenza21.com. Ms. Harte is also featured singing Going on Tom Cipullo’s CD, Landscape with Figures, released by Albany and the soprano solos on the live recording of McLeer’s Requiem available on iTunes. She is featured in 2 works on The Tempest Project CD slated for release early 2012 (Pogus Productions).
Ms. Harte’s directing credits include Natchez Festival of Music, Brooklyn College Opera Theater, RTB, Composer’s Voice Series, National Opera Center, Nevada Chamber Opera, and Nevada Opera Association, for whom she will direct Madame Butterfly in May.
Ms. Harte is on the voice faculty at Brooklyn College and maintains a successful private voice studio in NYC. Her professional students have sung with New York City Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, as well as major houses throughout the world.
